Poultry Feed Project

Poultry Feed Project

Reported by Fr. Lazar Arasu

Secret of any income generation project is sustainability, meaning, able to withstand, continue smoothly and durability. A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) distributed 11 croiller chicks to number of families with the intention of income generation and providing food security. But after an initial supply of feed to the quality of only 10 kilograms each people were left to fend for themselves. As a result the growing chickens were left to starve.
In order to tackle this pressing problem Don Bosco Refugee Services ventured into providing poultry feeds. Various feed components such as maize-brand, fish-meal, soya, sea-shell, sun flower cake and few other feed supplements were bought from Gulu and Kitgum and mixed together at the refugee settlement. The project was coordinated by Mr. Eugenio, a retired Agricultural Officer from Torit, South Sudan.
As the feeds were found to be of high quality, many poultry keepers began to buy them quickly and the demands grew rapidly. Now in a week about 400 to 500 kilograms of feed are mixed and sold. It is also used by the poultry project started by the Salesians of Don Bosco.
